What is Orthokeratology?

Corneal Reshaping Technology - also known as a "dream lens". It is the use of a gas permeable contact lens that is worn at night while a person is resting or sleeping. The goal is to improve vision without having refractive surgery. Also, people who are in sports and are concerned about contact lens displacement or prefer not to wear contact lens during the day time may prefer this option.

The practice of Orthographic (reshaping of the cornea) dates back to the 1940's. Over the next few decades various techniques were tried with unpredictable results. It wasn't until computers came along and better measuring instruments that it became feasible to generate new designs and test them to obtain repeated results.

Over the years there was a whole string of people and companies who threw their hat in the ring to develop the ultimate Orthokeratology lens and procedures. Eventually the Orthokeratology Academy of America was formed which provided a forum and platform to share ideas, solutions and results with members which really advanced the development of workable solutions and technologies.

In June of 2002 the FDA granted an approval for CRT "Corneal Refractive Therapy" thereby allowing the "Paragon CRT" to be worn by patients overnight. This FDA approval - no doubt - allowed the industry as a whole to move forward rapidly with the development of advanced and workable solutions for Orthokeratology.

The idea behind all this is that the reshaping of the cornea occurs by moving around the epithelial cells which happens when wearing the lens. These cells cover the surface of the cornea. It seems the cells are relocated and compressed in some areas.

Several companies produce Orthkeratology lenses using one of two technologies approved by the FDA. They are all gas permeable lenses. Eye health is maintained when using the approved lens because of the material it is made from. Here is a list of some companies who make and or design CRT solutions:

Paragon Vision Sciences: Paragon CRT marketed as Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK).

Baush & Lomb: Vision Shaping Treatment - 4 Designs: BE Retainer, Contex OK-E System, DreamLens, Emerald and Fargo.

There are sell structured settlement payment and side-effects, however. The side effects are usually a result of improper hygiene and using of tap water. However, some products to allow the use of clean tap water. If the lens is made of wrong material than the cornea could suffer from lack of oxygen (corneal hypoxia) when worn overnight or for prolonged periods of time. This is why it is important that they are made from oxygen permeable materials as it will substantially reduce hypoxia. Some people experience starbursting, ghosting, insurance qoute problems or double vision. These problems may be a result of an overly large pupil or lack of centration.

As with any medical procedure it is always recommended to get the advice of your trusted physician and for that matter even get more than 1 opinion. Especially in matters related to your health and where the outcome could have undesirable side effects, risks and complications.
