Common Online Poker Tells

A poker tell is impotence cause detectable change in a poker player's behavior that gives clues to that player's hand. An observant poker player can gain an advantage if he can understand the meaning of another player's tell, This is also called getting a "read". Unfortunately for online poker players, the most common sources of poker tells are disguised by online play. There are still a few ways in which an online player can get a "read" on his opponents though.

Decision Time

The speed to which a player acts during each round of betting can become an overwhelmingly strong clue. This online poker tell is very similar to the general tell that says a "player will act strong when they are weak, and weak when they are strong". Most commonly used form of this tell is when an online player will take nearly all of his allotted time to make a decision to call. Your not-so-deceptive opponent wants you to think he is making a tough decision, but in reality he is sitting on a monster. However, delayed action online can also just be a bad internet connection, or a player truly making a tough decision so it is important to observe the person for a while before making any conclusions. On the other side of this tell, a quick call generally implies that the player credit card purchases either a weak pair or a draw. They like their hand, but need to improve to feel good.

To Wait, or Not to Wait

Another online poker tell that can be beneficial occurs when a new player sits down at your table. Before the next hand starts this player will be asked if he would like to post a big blind or like to wait for the big blind to get to him naturally. If the player is only a few spots away from the blinds and decides to post the blind anyways, it shows that this player is impatient and wants to play. This generally means that this poker player is going to play weaker hands in order to play more often. Again, on the other side of this tell, a player who is willing to wait 5,6, even 7 hands is probably a patient player who will be able to wait for better hands before getting involved in a pot.

The Chat Box

Poker is a very social game, and online poker is no different. Every online poker table has a chat box in which players at the table can say pretty much anything they want. A lot of information is given out for free if you pay attention to what players are saying. The chat box is usually full of players venting after a bad beat, or arguing with each other. This is what you are looking for. In order to control the poker table you need to try to understand what the other players are feeling. For instance, if a player is clearly on tilt (he won't stop complaining in the chat box) and he moves "all in" you can make a looser call than you normally would because you know the player is off his rocker and is generally making poor choices. Just remember, all kinds of important information can be learned about the other players at the table by paying attention to what they are saying and to who they are saying it too.
